global challenge

Pick a global challenge to write an essay on. That’s the assignment. It’s worth 100% of the grade. Seems simple enough, right? Just pick a cause you’re passionate about and research the hell out of it. If you would’ve asked me this five years ago, I would’ve been ecstatic. Except…well, it’s five years later now and the world has regressed more than improved and I am not sure if there is really a point of trying to encourage anyone to make about any change if too many people are already desensitized and brainwashed into not giving a single (excuse my language) fuck about anything that doesn’t concern them. Social activism works for those who are already passionate, caring individuals. It does nothing for those who aren’t. And if we’re being completely honest, politicians and anyone in power are puppets to money, so as long as they are in power, then nothing we do will really ultimately matter. I am not sure we will ever quite have enough people to cause enough destruction to the point where it somehow, magically, actually takes those in power out of power…Even if some of the foundational structure gets torn down, there will always be people who will cling onto the comfort that these systems have brought about for dear life and it is because of these people—these few strands or polls of foundation that are still holding up the rest of the foundation— that the top of the pyramid may likely remain at the top. So, pick a global challenge to write an essay on they ask. But what should that be? Should it be about climate change and how we have five years left until the Earth will get so warm that we would no longer see snow and how Antartica is melting away and the food chain extinction that would cause? But see how they make it seem like the responsibility lays on the individual, than the corporations who are creating all of this damage in the first place, creating SO much unnecessary waste, to the point where the waste and the plastic outweighs the human population? Or should it be about injustice? But how could I write about that when we elect convicted felons into presidency who then somehow successfully try to turn an entire nation into a fascist country, even despite half of the country disagreeing and rebelling against such a plan? How no matter the protests, no matter the numbers, the donations, the information, the warning, the history, such politicians are still getting away with it? Or should I write about gender inequality? But wait, the moment women started earning their own money and realized that they do not need men for anything, we are now raising generations of boys to hate women for choosing themselves and hate themselves for feeling useless and this gender division is only getting worse, but somehow an essay talking about the same issues we’ve been talking about for decades will improve that, right?
